Do you think astronomy is boring? Do you think it’s all dead rocks, minerals, orbits and gravity? We urge you to think again. For one thing, consider the vastness of the Universe that surrounds us. Think about all the mysteries it harbours, not the least of which is the explanation for human life on Earth. Think about all its controversies. Is there life on Mars? Will we ever find life elsewhere in the Solar System? How many other Solar Systems are there? How far can man reach out into space? Will we ever solve the puzzle of the apparition of life on Earth? While we’d love to answer all these questions (or at least some of them) for you, we unfortunately can’t. But as NASA scientists are busy at work trying to solve these dilemmas, and many others, which our minds can barely fathom, we can only hope we’ve at least piqued your interest in astronomy. It really can be fun—but don’t take our word for it! Read on for three fun factoids we bet you did not know about the planets in our Solar System.

Ever-Changing Saturn

Saturn is considered one of the most beautiful planets in the Solar System, for the mere reason that it is the only one to display rings. Those rings, which were first discovered by esteemed pre-Renaissance scientist Galileo Galilei (famously executed for his claim that the Earth turns), can be seen without any aids or props from the Earth. Yet that is not always the case. Sometimes, in its way around the Sun, Saturn will become bashful and hide its famous rings from plain sight. That happens roughly every fourteen to fifteen years, as the giant turns a particular way. That very special angle makes the rings appear too thin to be seen from the Earth—which is why they seem to disappear every now and then.

Nowhere as Cold as Uranus

If you think Saturn is fascinating, then you should check out its gigantic brother Uranus. As we learned on a very educational planet site, no other place in the Solar System is quite as cold as Uranus. That is, of course, because it’s the second furthest planet away from the Sun. Until recently, Pluto was the proud owner of this dubious title, only little Pluto got demoted from being a fully-fledged planet to a dwarf, so now Uranus reigns supreme and icy. It can get as cold as -224 degrees Celsius on Uranus, or roughly -371 degrees Fahrenheit. So how come Neptune, which is the furthest planet from the Sun, also the coldest? That’s simple—yet also fascinating. Uranus is the only planet in the Solar System which absorbs more heat than it can actually release, since its core is much colder than that of the other planets.

Uranus’s Flipside

And in case you had any doubts left that Uranus is a strange place, take note of the fact that it is the only planet in our Solar System that has a tilt rotation movement. It basically flips over to the other side, which greatly impacts its seasonal characteristics. Since it takes the planet twenty-one years to complete a full day-and-night cycle, its seasonal cycle also lasts for the same span of time.

The Cambridge University offers a diversity of course programs managed by different departments.

Oxford University is one of the leading universities in the whole world. Many students from different countries wish to study in this learning institution because of its high-quality education that spawns a number of highly competitive graduates etching their own names in various disciplines and fields. The university’s tradition of excellence was rooted from its long and colorful history that molded the academic institution to its present state. Here is a brief historical background on one of the world’s best universities.

The University During The Middle Ages

Oxford University was believed to have been founded by Alfred the Great in 872. It was when he met some monks and engaged in a scholarly debate for a few days according to some legends. However, in reality, the university started in the 12th century when popular mentors started giving lectures to groups of students in the area. In 1167, the university was improved when the English King ordered all students studying in France to go back to the country mainly due to political reasons. Many of these youths decided to go to Oxford to continue their education.

In the beginning, there was a conflict between the townspeople and the students until there came a time when some students left and flocked to Cambridge. In 1214, the traders in Oxford were successful in persuading some of the students to return to the area. In the same year, the first ever Chancellor was appointed—his name is Robert Grosseteste.

The University in the 1500-1800

In 1476, the method of learning of the Oxford students changed when Caxton brought the printing press to England. During the Middle Ages, students gathered knowledge from lectures because books were rare luxuries around those times. With Caxton’s arrival, books became more common and accessible for the learners. From the seven liberal arts of the Middle Ages, the students began learning about humanities in the 16th century.

The 20th Century Oxford University

In 1965, the Oxford Centre for Management Studies came into being. In 1983, the center was renamed into Templeton College in honor of Sir John Templeton. In 1970, the Zoology and Psychology buildings were erected in the area. The Green College, meanwhile, was constructed in 1979.

From 1974 onwards, an increasing number of colleges at Oxford University changed from being exclusive to co-educational. The only exception is St. Hilda’s Blackfriars, a Dominican friary which was turned into a permanent private hall in the year 1994. In 1996, the Wycliffe Hall was also made private.

In the British context, a public educational institution is one that is usually historic and prestigious. It also charges some fees and doesn’t restrict admissions arbitrarily. A public school in Britain is financed by other institutions aside from the state, such as a number of private charitable trust. A government-run school is called “state school” in the country.

A number of independent schools don’t refer to themselves as “public school” because a few “minor” public schools possess the traditions and social associations of public schools sans the quality of extracurricular activities and teaching. Historically, the term “public” pertained to schools which were opened to the paying public. On the other hand, religious schools were opened only to members of a particular church or beijing housing. Private tutors were hired by very wealthy people who can afford to give their children private home education.

Public educational institutions have played a major role in developing the Victorian social elite. The curriculum of leading public schools was developed based on the physical activities for young men belonging to the upper and upper middle class families. These public schools were the breeding grounds for the gentlemanly elite of the Victorian armed forces, colonial government and politics.

Victorian public schools have been considered as superb learning environment but the usage of the prefect system and corporal punishment can also make these awful. In addition, the curriculum was criticized for being insufficient in providing skills in engineering or sciences. Currently, most public schools in Britain are selective on financial and academic grounds in addition to social grounds.

Education in Britain is managed by the Department for Education and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. The implementation of public education and state schools policies is handled by the local authorities. The education system has four stages namely Nursery (for children aged 3-4), Primary education (for children aged 4-11), Secondary (for ages 11-18) and Tertiary (for ages 18 and up). In the UK, full-time education is mandated for all children with ages 5 to sixteen. Educational progress of the students from all levels is tracked via a mixture of classroom observations and assessment. Also, formal and informal parental consultations take place throughout the academic year.

There are some striking differences between the state and private sector when it comes to education but the learning system in Wales, Northern Island and England also differ from one another. Students from various parts of the world aspire to study in Britain because of its competitive educational system.
